Bertram Brown Papers

Abstract

Dr. Bertram S. Brown was a key figure in the national effort to redefine and expand mental health services during the 1960s and 1970s. Dr. Brown's distinguished federal career at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) helped shape many of the decisions which led to these changes. His tenure at NIMH culminated in his appointment as the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health in 1970.

Dr. Louis Sokoloff was a neurochemical researcher who conducted and directed research projects at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) for 50 years, most of that time as Chief of the Section (later Laboratory) of Cerebral Metabolism. He was best known for his use of PET imaging to examine chemical reactions in the brain.

Correspondence, reports, drafts, psychological testing instruments, subject files, and audio and video recordings which document a 1989 joint NIMH/U.S. State Department delegation visit to the Soviet Union to assess the state of Soviet psychiatry. The delegation focused on the diagnosis status, treatment, and human rights protections given to political and religious dissidents who had been involuntarily committed to psychiatric hospitals.
